"We play a significant role as far as the offensive side of the game," Eberle said. "Whether Im penalty killing next year or doing whatever, I know Im going to play a lot more. That, in itself, youve got to take leadership there. "Definitely, we have to take a lot bigger role as far as leadership and try to guide this team." Aside from Eberle, Hall and Nugent-Hopkins, defenceman Jeff Petry and goaltender Devan Dubnyk made great strides and took on bigger roles as the season went on. SAN FRANCISCO -- The brains behind two of the last three World Series titles plan to stick together for at least another four seasons.

"The glory days of the franchise are now," Giants President and CEO Larry Baer said before the opener of the Bay Bridge Series against the Oakland Athletics began at AT&T Park. "I think its important to acknowledge that and pay tribute to the people who have done it, from the general managers office to the managers office, to get us where we are now." San Francisco has come a long way the past three years. In 2010, the Giants made an improbable run to the franchises first title since 1954 -- and first since moving from New York in 1958 -- when Sabean assembled a collection of self-described "misfits and castoffs." Bochy blended the talent together perfectly, beating the Texas Rangers in five games that fall. Last season, San Francisco won the NL West well before the final day of the season but took a far more perilous path through the playoffs. The Giants overcame a 2-0 series deficit to beat the Reds three straight games in Cincinnati, rallied from a 3-1 hole against St. Louis to capture the NL pennant and swept the Detroit Tigers for seal another World Series crown. The cohesion between Bochy and Sabean has been apparent all along. The two are remarkably different personalities -- Bochy always "calm and cool," Sabean "fiery and emotional," as both men described the other -- but have become friends on and off the field to form one of baseballs top manager-GM tandems. "Weve been collaborative, and I really believe thats the reason weve had success," Sabean said. Both men credited the close living quarters for furthering their relationship. They live in separate condos in a high-rise building across the street from AT&T Park during the season, and its not uncommon to see them walking together with their families before and after games, or even just a random afternoon. "It makes the task of managing a little less daunting when you have the support that I get," Bochy said. "Weve been through a lot together, the ups and downs. He was always there." Sabean hired Bochy, now 57, away from the rival San Diego Padres in 2007 to replace Felipe Alou. But there wasnt immediate success and both men received harsh criticism along the way for moves they made and those they didnt. In October 2009, the futures of Sabean and Bochy were uncertain. At that time, both received two-year extensions from then-Giants managing partner Bill Neukom. Neukom saw enough positive signs from a club that stayed in the wild-card chase until mid-September in 09 but missed the playoffs for a sixth straight year. Even after Bochys first season -- and home run king Barry Bonds last -- ended with a 71-91 record, some fan message boards called for his firing. Others figured Sabean deserved a shot to turn things around with Bonds finally out of the picture. Together, Sabean and Bochy have done just that at last -- Sabean making a handful of risky moves, and Bochy finding a way to bring it all together. Three years ago, Pat Burrell got a second chance after Tampa Bay released him. The Giants picked up Cody Ross in August off waivers from the Marlins, and he became a post-season star, winning NL championship MVP honours in San Franciscos six-game victory over the favoured Philadelphia Phillies. Sabean also promoted catcher Buster Posey that May and traded away Bengie Molina. All Posey has done since is win Rookie of the Year, the 2012 NL MVP and batting title and two World Series titles sandwiched around an injury-shattered 2011 season. Last year, Sabean found a similar spark in second baseman Marco Scutaro, acquired from the Colorado Rockies before the trade deadline. Scutaro won the NL championship MVP and reached agreement on a three-year deal a day after centre field Angel Pagan earned a four-year deal in December. Bochys calming influence also helped players move past All-Star game MVP Melky Cabreras suspension for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. The Giants also decided to keep Cabrera off the post-season roster when his 50-game suspension expired. And once again, Sabean has kept nearly the entire roster intact to make another run at a title. "A lot of continuity," Sabean said. "I think thats what defines this organization." Keeping the architects of the team intact for the long haul had been a top priority this off-season for Baer, who said the club first picked up options for next season on both deals during the winter meetings. Baer said he met with Bochy and Sabean again during spring training when time allowed them to hammer out longer extensions. Sabean, 56, is the longest-tenured GM in the majors heading into his 17th season with San Francisco -- the place he has said hed like to stay for the rest of his career. He became the Giants GM in 1996 after three years in player personnel. He was in the Yankees organization from 1985-92 as a scout, scouting director and player development director. All three front-office members said there was an incentive to get the deals done before opening day. "Four more years, it sounds like a political campaign," Baer said. Roger Federer was a has-been, and Andy Murray was a never-to-be. Harsh, yes. But in the nine grand slams beginning with the 2010 French Open, the scoreboard in wins read Rafael Nadal 5, Novak Djokovic 4. And Federer and Murray, zero. And as for the 25-year-old Murray, he appeared to be a victim mostly of bad timing. His talent was evident, but he was playing in an era where the trio ahead of him had won 30 of the previous 32 grand slams since 2005. The stakes, then, were high at Wimbledon in early July when with Nadal out in the second round, the third-seeded Federer was able to oust world number one Djokovic in the semis to set up a title match with Murray. London would also provide the stage for what may be Milos Raonics biggest performance to date. While Raonic has had his fair share of success in his young tennis career and has even won a pair of tournaments early in 2012, it was his epic second-round match against world No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga that resonates as his grand achievement. After trading 6-3 victories in the first two sets, Raonic and Tsonga tested each others endurance in an epic match that would set a new Olympic record, with the third set lasting an almost-unfathomable three hours. Raonic and Tsonga would fire serve after serve at one another with neither giving much ground once the third set got past 6-6, and it just kept on going. Audiences tuning in expecting it to end "any minute now" saw a testament to the will of both men, as Tsonga would eventually take the third set 25-23. Mike Richards Purple Jersey. The Olympics would see another marathon in the semifinals when Federer and Juan Martin del Potro played a third set that lasted two hours and 43 minutes. Riz on the Great Scot The drama was heavy and the irony fresh when Murray and Federer met again at the All England Club centre court just four weeks after their thrilling Wimbledon finale at the London Olympics with a gold medal at stake. And as so often happens in sports, the rematch looked nothing like the first meeting. Where Federer won in four sets at Wimbledon, Murray completely shut down the Swiss superstar on the very same court at the Olympics. With momentum now in hand, the US Open in New York provided Murray a final stage to pursue one last piece of business. But there would be no third meeting with Federer, who was ousted earlier in the quarter-finals. It would be Djokovic that Murray faced in the final, and after surviving a pair of tiebreaks and a five-set marathon, Murray could finally raise his arms as a Grand Slam winner. In the space of just two months, Murray went from never-to-be to a Grand Slam and Olympic champion. And Federer reclaimed glory and added another chapter to his legend. Superb and satisfying on both accounts. McNeil on Serenas Snap-back Summer Serena Williams year started on a pretty low note. Entering 2012 ranked 12th in the world, Serena had not won a major in over a year. To compound matters, she stumbled through the first half of the year. She withdrew before the quarters in Brisbane before crashing out in the fourth round at the Aussie Open to complete a forgettable January. She would win a pair of minor tournaments in Charleston and Madrid in the spring, but would kill that momentum by losing to 111th-ranked Virignie Razzano at the French Open. However, something switched on with Serena once summer hit and the player that had been so dominant in the 2000s returned. She would drop just one set from the quarters onward to win the Wimbledon womens singles title. Less than a month later shed win double gold at the London Olympics, including a masterful singles title where she lost just one game to Maria Sharapova. Serena would come back from the brink to beat Victoria Azarenka to win the US Open and then go on to take the WTA Tour Championships, finishing the year ranked third in the world. "It will be tough to play in their building, but we usually have success against them," said Patrik Elias, who also scored in the first period along with Adam Henrique. "We stuck with it again. Its nice that theyre looking up at us in the standings." Andrei Loktionov had the prettiest goal for New Jersey, with a toe-drag move that left goalie Ilya Bryzgalov at his mercy. The win was the second straight and third in four games for the Devils following a six-game losing streak that dropped them close to the eighth-place cutoff for the playoffs.
